The Lords of Deliverance series is a spinoff of Larissa Ione's Demonica series. However, I haven't read the Demonica series. I picked this up because goodreads.com recommended it to me based off of my "must reads shelf".
What can be a better lure than the four horsemen of the Apocalypse? What about a love story about the end of the world and how love can save it? What about hellhound bonds and immortality? Still not interested, how about the fact that one of the horseman is female? If I haven't interested you by now... quit reading this review.
Cara was a typical human female, for the most part. Her life had taken a turn for the worst when her house was broken into while she was home. Her and her boyfriend had taken a beating that night, and it was about to get worse, when Cara's gift decided to make an appearance in a very unexpected way. Usually a power meant for healing, when turned on a human, caused the men to internally combust. The cause of death being labeled a heart attack. This should have been Cara's first clue that she was in for more than a normal life on this earth but it wasn't until a hellhound showed up on her front porch that she would become anything more than a human with amazing healing powers.
War, Pestilence, Famine and Death. All awaited the day that their seals would break and they would truly become those things. Ares/War knew his time would come as soon as his brother's seal was broken. With Pestilence comes War and with War comes Death and Famine.
Pestilence was hunting down the fallen angel who held Ares seal when the angel decided to transfer the seal to an unsuspecting human. Pestilence, from that point, only had to wait. The human wouldn't last long. The seal was not meant to be held by human. They would only last a few days before it drained them completely and the seal would be broken.
Ares found the human, she was not what he expected. Because she held his seal, just her proximity was affecting every aspect of this being. He was able to feel things he hadn't felt since the days he thought he was human. She numbed his senses and she awakened his emotions. With Pestilence tracking his every move this could not be good.
Before all is said and done, Cara finds her strength and proves her worth in Ares' eyes but is it enough? Will his love for her be enough to save them and the world from the absolute destruction? Will Pestilence find his foothold in Ares life?
This is one of the best books I have ever read. At first I was thrown by me "knowledge" of the mythology of the Underworld and of mythology but her spin on all of it made for a very intriguing read and it was very hard to put down. I gave this book a 5 out of five star rating because this was unlike anything I had ever read before much like my first reading of Karen Marie Monning.
